Job Description: Project Engineer – Mechanical Systems

Company background

EchoFirst is the creator of the most complete Solar Energy solution available. For consumers who have been waiting for the right moment to get a solar energy system, Echo® is the most powerful solar energy system available today. It captures more of the sun's energy than a basic PV system, giving our customers the power to meet a majority of their home's energy needs. You can find more details of our solution at http://www.pvtsolar.com/home.html. With substantial market traction already validating the value proposition which we have to offer to our customers, combined with the continuing rapid growth of the renewable energy market, we are on a mission to build a unique and differentiated experience for our end customers and a world-class sales & service organization for New Home Builders and our channel partners.

The company is in its early stage of growth – rapidly moving on from product development, market validation and initial commercialization to building a scalable organization structure, infrastructure and service platforms. We are looking for individuals who are self motivated, results oriented and have the passion to succeed in a highly entrepreneurial and fast-paced environment. To succeed in this role you will possess a combination of leadership abilities with detail-oriented execution skills and business savvy.

Job Summary

The lead design engineer for mechanical systems will be responsible for leading the designs of our air-side and water-side Balance of System (BOS) mechanical packages. These BOS packages are central to delivering the thermal energy from the PV/Thermal array to the end uses of space heating, water heating, and ventilation within the building. These mechanical packages must be designed to perform with the utmost in durability and reliability in order to maximize total lifecycle performance.

You will work with our R&D teams to determine the performance requirements of individual components within the BOS packages (this will range from the thermal performance of heat exchangers to the optimal flow rates for fans and pumps). You will identify components that meet these targeted specifications and assist in the development and execution of component and system test plans.

At PVT Solar all of our products and solutions must be aligned with existing trade practices and building codes. Ease of installation is a key development driver. You will interact with the solar, HVAC, and plumbing trades and adopt best practices for our system designs. You will ensure that our systems are compliant with existing and emerging codes as well as typical mechanical systems within the building.

Responsibilities

  • Design & develop our BOS mechanical packages based on the product requirements developed with the group director & cross-functional teams
  • Perform component selection and vendor qualifications for the system components and assembly of the mechanical packages
  • Work with operations to set up QA mechanisms for received parts and assemblies
  • Develop test plans for in-house testing and evaluation for individual components and completed assemblies to ensure product reliability in the field: ensuring product quality and reliability will be a key responsibility for this position
  • Facilitate the construction of prototype packages for testing and evaluation.
  • Work with our R&D teams to develop thermal performance tests to ensure BOS packages achieve technical requirements for system performance.
  • Interface with our software & controls group to ensure that all mechanical components can be properly operated by our system controller
  • Work with outside agencies to obtain any necessary product listings and certifications

Experience

  • A self-starter with the ability to work independently as well as in a cross-disciplinary environment is essential
  • 5+ Years experience in appliance and consumer product engineering
  • 5+ Years experience with SolidWorks (preferred) or Pro Engineer
  • Experience in HVAC system design and hydronic heating systems is valued
  • Experience in product durability testing and accelerated ageing tests
  • A basic knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics
  • Familiarity with product listings and certifications (UL, ETL, CE, AMCA)

Education

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering required
  • MS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent industry experience preferred
